Flight Deck Repairs Complete and Testing Underway

  • Airlander’s completed repairs announced to the media today.
  • All major structural repairs are complete
  • The Airlander team have embarked on an extensive testing and training schedule prior to resuming the Flight Test Programme soon. The Airlander team are pleased to announce that the structural damage sustained to the Flight Deck during its second Test Flight last August has now been repaired.  Following this successful repair of the Flight Deck structure, Airlander is now structurally complete ahead of Hangar Exit and resuming the Flight Test Programme.  A rigorous testing and training programme has now commenced to prepare for Airlander taking to the skies again.
The flight deck instrument panels, overhead console and all associated wiring have already been reinstalled successfully. This was aided by weeks of preparation, which allowed large sections to be moved at the same time and clipped in to place. With the equipment installed, “power-on” has been achieved and on-aircraft testing has now begun.

Hybrid Air Vehicles’ CEO, Stephen McGlennan said, “We’re delighted to have made the progress we have in our repairs and look forward to restarting our test flight programme soon.”
A comprehensive investigation has taken place since Airlander’s heavy landing in August, the root causes of which are now fully understood and a number of changes in procedures and training have been implemented. The aerospace community has been incredibly supportive of the Airlander and what the team continue to achieve.
We are pleased to report that our insurers, led by Allianz, have helped us significantly in the phase after our heavy landing - reflecting their confidence in the Airlander’s upcoming test flight programme.

Hybrid Air Vehicles Ltd is not announcing a specific date for the next flight of Airlander.  Achieving a safe flight is the priority, and we will make further announcements in due course.

About Hybrid Air Vehicles Ltd

Founded in 2007, Hybrid Air Vehicles is the company behind the innovative Airlander range of hybrid aircraft. They utilise new aerospace technology that combines the best of the characteristics of fixed wing aircraft and helicopters with lighter-than-air technology to create a new breed of hyper-efficient aircraft, with a significantly lower carbon footprint and operating cost than other forms of air transport.

Airlanders are low noise, low pollution, and are environmentally-friendly. They have ultra-long endurance, and a point-to-point cargo-carrying capacity. They can take off and land in a short distance from unprepared sites in desert, ice, water, or open field environments. Hybrid Air Vehicles has been awarded both UK and European grant funding to support the Airlander project. In addition the company has carried out two ‘crowdfunding’ rounds and is proud to have more than 2000 shareholders without whom return to flight would not have been possible. 2.5 million in funding from the EU's research and innovation programme, Horizon 2020.
The Airlander project was selected for funding through a dedicated SME Instrument of Horizon 2020, which the European Commission uses to invest in and support high growth and highly innovative small businesses. The technology is also fully in line with activities under the Smart, Green and Integrated Transport Societal Challenge of Horizon 2020, which aims to boost the competitiveness of the European transport industries and achieve a European transport system that is resource-efficient, climate-and-environmentally-friendly, safe and seamless for the benefit of all citizens, the economy and society.
Airlander 10 is designed to stay airborne for up to five days at a time to fulfil a wide range of communication and survey roles, as well as cargo carrying and tourist passenger flights.

HAV Makes Key Appointments
Today, Hybrid Air Vehicles announces key appointments to prepare the business for growth and the launch of our Airlander 10 production programme. With customer interest increasing, these appointments are an important step in getting HAV ready for the future.   As a part of HAV’s preparations for rapid growth, our Board has appointed Tom Grundy as Chief Executive Officer, effective 30th May. Tom has been with the business for six years and has been instrumental in driving progress forward with customers and other stakeholders across a variety of markets.   Tom brings with him significant experience in the aerospace and defence industry which has proved very valuable to HAV, and will continue to be so in his new role. A Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, his prior experience covers a range of senior engineering and programme leadership roles at BAE Systems, including serving as the Head of Business Management for ATTAC, the Tornado availability support service.   Tom comments: “I am honoured and excited to be given the opportunity to lead HAV through its transition to a successful commercial business. This business is poised to deliver an aircraft that offers new choices to customers in a low-carbon, capable, flexible, and cost-effective way. I look forward to working with the whole team to make our goals a reality.”   Stephen McGlennan, who has served as HAV’s CEO for six years, will step into a new role as Senior Board Advisor and General Counsel. We are delighted that in this new role Steve will continue to provide the company with the benefits of his deep experience and his long understanding of HAV’s business. HAV thanks Steve for his enormous contribution to the business in his time as CEO, and as COO and General Counsel before that.   We have also named a new Chief Operating Officer, Nick Allman. Nick has held several roles at HAV, most recently that of Executive Director – Aircraft Delivery. He has brought the team from successfully securing the LEMV programme, through first flight, to being ready for production launch, and will now move forward with greater responsibility for the management of operations across the business.   We can also confirm that, as the time commitment demanded by the rapid developments at HAV has proved more onerous than anticipated given his other activities, Kevin Taylor and HAV have, by mutual consent, agreed that Kevin will step down as the Chairman and a Director of the company. Rod Sinclair, a long-standing Director, has taken on the Chairmanship of the Company. He comments: “I am delighted to be working with Tom, the Board and the leadership team of the business as we prepare HAV for launch of its production aircraft programme.”   Full biographies of Tom Grundy, Nick Allman, Stephen McGlennan, and Rod Sinclair are available upon request.
